Spring Planting

Our 'Queen of the Garden' is the tomato and each year we start with tomato-planting as the foundation of spring planting.  We decided on 15 different varieties...and plan to grow about 36 plants total.  Check out some of these beauties...
Blondkopfchen (blondeheads, in German)

Berkley Tiedye                     Julia Childs

Jetsetter

Brandysweet (cross between Brandywine and Sweet 100's)

Ludmilla's Red Plum (great for paste)

Mandarin Cross

Super Marzano (one plant recently suffered fatal injuries from the chickens)

Taxi

Top Sirloin

Yellow Pear

 Sweet 100's

Better Boy

We visited Love Apple Farm and OSH early last month and brought home our new tomato plants.  Over the next two days the kids and I transplanted all of them to 1 gallon pots with our homemade potting soil.

Each plant then received a mini-greenhouse cover from a recycled water jug.  The plants have been growing like crazy ever since!  Since then we have been transplanting the plants into the garden as they mature enough to tolerate being outdoors without protection.  The kids have worked hard at two of our biggest garden upgrades...one of which is our new tomato cages.  These awesome tomato cages have been on our garden-wish-list for years.  Thanks to a couple of generous donations, to our garden fund (thanks, Mom and Dad), we were able to buy the supplies to create these fabulous new additions!
